Guiding principles

The mission of SÍN Arts Centre is to create a safe space for artistic development with a focus on transparency and horizontality. SÍN collaborates with the makers in their artistic processes, offers production management, and accompanies their career development.

As a production house, SÍN investigates the concept of sustainability through a dedicated Dragonfly programme.

SÍN actively promotes critical perspectives and aims to further develop a flexible, innovative, and strong community of artists and art professionals locally and globally.

History

Established in 2009, SÍN is a Budapest-based production house with four spacious dance studios. The SÍN project was an initiative of independent dance makers at the time, with the aim of creating a safe space for themselves to develop creative work, an environment for horizontal encounters, and an offer of space and time without restrictions.

In mid-2010, SÍN expanded its dance service infrastructure and began to offer production management, advice on artistic and career development, and administration support. Since then, it has become one of the most important hubs in Budapest for contemporary dance, with programmes initiated in cooperation with international partners—all with a focus on process-based production and horizontality.

Building and facilities

In the suburbs of Budapest, a community building for workers from the socialist times was converted into a contemporary art space with three spacious dance studios and a smaller one for theatre productions.

SÍN's largest studio has light equipment, which allows for studio presentations and public showings for an audience of 50 people. A spacious lobby houses plants, seating for eating, an adjacent community kitchen, and offers a space for artists to meet, for SÍN to organise community events, and, occasionally, ping-pong championships. The basement offers storage to independent makers for their props, set, and dressing rooms with showers.

SÍN provides space and time for artists, creative groups and companies to develop their artistic work.
