Guiding principles

Trafó – House of Contemporary Arts in Budapest is an open-minded venue in Hungary, and is also a cornerstone of the international contemporary arts scene, showcasing various genres – theatre, dance, new circus, music and other visual arts – in a unique and authentic manner. Trafó is a forum dedicated to social issues, and a platform for establishing values and contexts as well as generating new ideas and productions.

Its 3 key missions are: showcasing various genres in a unique and authentic manner, providing a space for the presentation of work by both domestic Hungarian and international artists and being a dedicated space for establishing values.

Building description

The transformer station at Lilom Street has been built in 1909. It has the industrial characteristic of Art Noveau creations. The building that has been more than 40 years abandoned was occupied in 1991 by the French Resonance Group, which opened the house to the alternative audience. Performances, concerts and performances followed each other one summer and then worked for a while as the house contained. The Municipality of Budapest bought the building from remaining money of the not settled Expo and the iconic Andrássy út Young Artists’ Club (FMK), converted to a successor of the present age appropiate, multi-functional, well equipped, contemporary art center.

Trafó – House of Contemporary Arts opened its doors in 1998 during the Budapest Autumn Festival with an Yvette Bozsik’s piece. The successful fusion between original Art Noveau architecture and the renovation gives the building its unique identity and ambience. The space available has been specifically designed for performers with changing needs. It is a comfortable, fully renovated building with dance studios and a stage for all night performances, multimedia shows and music events. The main hall is fit for medium size productions providing very intimate and close connection on a high raking grandstand witht he public up to 300 seats.

Trafó – House of Contemporary Arts was founded in 1998. Based on the wording of the founders of Trafó, “an institution, a building, a square, a medium, an intellectual adventure, risk, possibility”, it is a cornerstore of the international contemporary arts scene.
